Luna Polo Shines Bright to Win Eldorado Cup 4 Goal

Luna Polo wins second 4 Goal title of the season

Perhaps powered by the full moon of Friday evening February 10, Jennifer Alexy and David Carlson's Luna Polo team (Jennifer Alexy .5, David Carlson -1, Diego Larregli 2, Ernesto Ezcurra 2)  shone brightly on Sunday morning February 12 to roll to a 7.5 to 6 victory over Steve Pollack and Pat Powell's Le Mirage/Blazers (Steve Pollack -1, Pat Powell, Kyle Fargey 3, Alvaro Tadeo 2) in the final game of the Eldorado Cup 4 Goal Tournament. With a large and vocal 10 AM Cantina breakfast crowd in attendance, Luna started off with a handicap award of one half goal and Le Mirage/Blazers took an early lead with a quick goal at the start but Luna Polo got it back and the first ended with the satellites up by the handicap difference.Luna outscored Le Mirage/Blazers 4 to 2 in the second that allowed them a comfortable lead at halftime of 5.5 - 3.Each team counted once in the third.Le Mirage/Blazers closed the gap with a quick goal in the fourth but came no closer as Luna Polo counted one more. The Pollack and Powell partnership grabbed another late to end the game at 7.5 - 6.The Luna scoring came from Ezcurra with four (one foul), Alexy counting two, and Larregli with one.The reply saw Tadeo notch four (three fouls) and Fargey strike twice.Tony Gregg

Northern Blizzard Wins Eldorado Cup 8 Goal

The northern invaders continue 2016 dominance into the current season.

The 2016 Eldorado Polo Club Season was a very good one for John Rooney and his Northern Blizzard polo team as they dominated to win every tournament they contested - including the USPA Pacific Coast Circuit Governor's Cup. With that in mind, Rooney brought the gang back together for the 2017 season and the start was a good one as the same Northern Blizzard (John Rooney 1, Joe Henderson 4, Dayelle Fargey 1, Jimmy Wright 2) defeated Grant Palmer and his Antelope group (Grant Palmer -1, Santiago Trotz 5, Caroline Anier 1, Remy Du Celliee Muller 3) in the 8 Goal Eldorado Cup by a final score of 9 - 6 on Sunday, February 12.In front of a large crowd on a beautiful afternoon, the northern invaders never trailed and led by one at 1 - 0 after the first and it was obvious that the old gang hadn't lost a step as the chemistry was still there.Antelope got even in the early second but Rooney and Co. scored twice to lead by two going to the third at 3 - 1.Northern Blizzard continued to dominate in the third with a pair of counters (one a penalty four conversion by Wright) to just one for Antelope and the lead was now three at 5 - 2 going to halftime. The next two were played even on the board with one apiece in the fourth and two each in the fifth (including a 60 yard conversion from Wright) to carry the Northern Blizzard three goal advantage to the final at 8 - 5.The lead increased to four goals in the final frame (another Wright free throw from 60 yards) and it was pretty much over. Antelope scored one more but they simply weren't able to get any closer and Northern Blizzard captured the Eldorado Cup.Scoring for the victors were Wright with six and Fargey grabbing three. The reply from the Junior Pronghorns included Palmer with two (one a great steal and run), Trotz with a pair (one open goal), and Du Celliee Muller and Anier with one each.Tony Gregg

Cotterel Controls Antelope to Win Beal 12 Goal

Cotterel shows off ability in very impressive victory

On an almost perfect Sunday aternoon - 78 degrees and sunny - Jenny Luttrel-Benardoni's Cotterel Farms polo team was in control, most of the way, of Geoff Palmer's Antelope group as they rode to an impressive 15 - 8 win and in doing so won the 12 Goal Carlton and Keleen Beal Cup.Antelope started quickly to lead early, as Jared Sheldon jumped out front to score easily . Ruben Coscia got that back in short order and it appeared that the tussle was going to be close - at least in the early going. Juan Curbelo then scored for Cotterel to lead by one, but Remy Du Celliee Muller replied with his first of the day and the first ended in a tie at  two apiece. The Idaho farmhands led again in the early second with a counter from Matthew Fonseca but a Geoff Palmer penalty two conversion for the Pronghorns brought the count to even once again to end the frame (3 - 3).Cotterel continued to flex their muscle in the third period with Fonseca getting his second and Coscia counting on a penalty four strike to lead by two. Du Celliee Muller got one back for Antelope but Coscia, with his third of the day, got the two goal advantage back.  Sheldon's second goal of the game brought Antelope to within one at the half (6 - 5).Antelope saw some light in the early fourth as Sheldon grabbed his third to tie the count at six. The tie score didn't last long however, as Coscia and then Curbelo scored to get back the two goal lead for the farmhands going to the fifth (8 - 6).Fonseca with his third, on an absolutely brilliant set up from Coscia to the center of the goal from 45 yards to the right and two yards off the line (the announcer's shot of the day), gave Cotterel its biggest lead of the game at three. A safety conversion from 65 yards for Santiago Trotz and a penalty two strike from Palmer brought the Pronghorns within one but that would end their scoring for the day. Coscia, with a penalty two and one from the field, regained the Cotterel three goal advantage to end the fifth at 11 - 8.Coming out in the final frame, the Idahoans did not simply try to protect the lead but played like the winners they were about to be, as they applied relentless pressure to score four unanswered counters - Lutterel-Benardoni with one, Curbelo with two, and Coscia notching his second penalty four effort. Antelope was unable to recover and it was over and Luttrel-Benardoni and her Cotterel cohorts clinched the victory and the Carlton and Keleen Beal 12 Goal Cup.Coscia, with his very steady and impacting play was the obvious choice for MVP, and Curbelo's  fifth chukker gray mare Reliquia, owned by Cotterel Farms, wore the Best Playing Pony cooler back to the barn.COTTEREL FARMS (12) - Jenny Luttrel-Benardoni, Ruben Coscia 5, Juan Curbelo 5, Matthew Fonseca 2.ANTELOPE (12) - Geoff Palmer, Santiago Trotz 5, Jared Sheldon 4, Remy Du Celliee Muller 3.Tony Gregg

Thermal Hangs On to Win World Gym Over Palm Desert

2017 marks the 30th year of World Gym Tournament

Reg Whyte and his Thermal polo team (Whyte, Mitch Horne, Dayelle Fargey 1.5, Jimmy Wright 2) took an early lead and hung on to win the 29th renewal of the Mike Uretz Family World Gym Tournament over Dan Horn and his Palm Desert aggregation (Horn, Becky Schaller -1, Matt Walker 2, Ashton Wolf 3) by a final score of 5.5 - 4.Thermal, playing primarily on horses bred and raised by Whyte, took advantage of a slow Palm Desert start and dominated the first chukker to come out with a two goal lead at 2 - 0.The lead was increased in the second as Whyte and Co. kept their early pressure on and were able to convert a pair of forty yard tries and counted another in the third to lead 5.5 - 0 going to the final.Palm Desert finally came alive in the fourth and started to move the ball and Thermal - who may have relaxed a little - couldn't do much at all to stop the new found momentum. A pair of goals led to another and then another and the Horn Group were in business needing just two more with almost three minutes remaining. However, Thermal regained some composure and were able to regain the control they previously exerted and hung on to win the World Gym Trophy.Wright led the way for the winners with four goals (three fouls) and Horne had one.Wolf had a pair for Palm Desert and Walker converted two penalty three attempts. With his controlled and effective play, Wright was named the MVP and Sabrina, Wolf's fourth chukker mare, was honored as the Best Playing Pony.Tony Gregg

Cotterel Strikes Back and Grabs 8 Goal Officer's Cup

Cotterel Farms turns the tables to defeat Antelope by five

Just one week ago Geoff Palmer's Antelope polo team (Geoff Palmer, Grant Palmer -1, Santiago Trotz 5, Jared Sheldon 4), playing in the Mack and Madelyn Jason 8 Goal championship game,  struck early and often to take an insurmountable lead over Jenny Luttrel-Benardoni's Cotterel Farms team (Jenny Luttrel-Benardoni, Francisco Benardoni 1, Ruben Cosia 5, Matthew Fonseca 2) and go on to win the first tournament of the season. As fate would have it, the same two teams were matched up in the Coachella Valley/Officer's Cup final on Sunday, January 29 and things could not have been more different. Where one week previous, Antelope took control at the start, this time Cotterel assumed that role and never looked back and ran to an immpressive 14 - 9 victory.Right from the opening bowl in it was obvious that Cotterel was fired up and ready as they stormed out to a three to nil lead with every player on the team armed to hunt Antelope. The pronghorns were able to get one back via the free throw line and the first was over with the farmhands leading by a pair.Antelope recovered in the second and were able to draw within one at 4 - 3.The third period was played even at two goals apiece and it looked like Geoff Palmer and Co. had recovered and were now prepared to take control in the second half.If it looked like Antelope had adjusted and were set to take charge after halftime, it looked even more so that Cotterel were more prepared to do the same as they simply negated any thoughts that the pronghorns had of coming back. As a result, the Luttrel-Benardoni farmhands counted three goals to none and lead by four after the fourth at 9 - 5.As happened earlier, Antelope recovered and were able to stay with Cotterel in the fifth frame with both teams scoring three times. However, the farmhands were more than prepared to hold the four goal lead going to the sixth.Cotterel continued to press in the final chukker and were not about to let Antelope back in and as a result counted two more to but one and it was over and Cotterel were awarded the first place Roenisch Bronzes. The Cotterel scoring came from Coscia with six (two fouls), while Fonseca had five, and Benardoni sunk three. The reply from Antelope saw Sheldon grab four, Trotz with three (two fouls), and Geoff and Grant Palmer sinking one foul opportunity apiece.Because of his aggressive and defensive thwarting play, Fonseca was chosen as the MVP and Melissa, played by Cosia in the first chukker, was awarded the Best Playing Pony blanket.Tony Gregg

Luna Polo Easily Wins Beal Cup Final

Winner goes undefeated through entire tournament

Jennifer Alexy's Luna Polo (Jennifer Alexy .5, Roisin Obrien/Dave Carlson -1, Diego Larregli 2, Ernesto Ezcurra 2,  Obrien played final) went through the qualifying round of the Carlton and Keleen Beal Cup rather easily without a loss and the January 22nd final turned out to be the same as they easily triumphed over Shore Thing/M1 Financial (Lamar Rutherford -1, Malia McCoy 1, Abby Riggs, Rodrigo Salinas 3) by a score of 6 - 4.5.Having to give up a half goal handicap at the start didn't affect Luna in the slightest as they took control at the outset and controlled almost every aspect of the game.A first period lead of 1.5 (2 - .5)  and an equal advantage at the half (3 - 1.5) became insurmountable after three chukkers at 6 - 1.5.  Shore Thing/M1 Financial scored three goals in the final but it wasn't nearly enough as Luna Polo  grabbed the Beal Cup without trouble. In the win, Ezcurra scored four times (two fouls) and Alexy and Larregli counted one each.In reply, McCoy had two while Salinas and Riggs scored one apiece.Ezcurra was deamed to be the MVP and Marley, Alexy's third chukker horse, was chosen as the Best Playing Pony.Tony Gregg

Antelope Strikes Early to Best Cotterel in Jason Final

The Palmer group victorious in first tournament final of 2017

The rain delayed final game of the Mack and Madelyn Jason Memorial was played on Sunday, January 22 on a rather cool and damp desert afternoon. In spite of the inhospitable conditions, Geoff Palmer's Antelope group ( Grant Palmer -1, Santiago Trotz 5, Jared Sheldon 4, Rhandy Heredia - sub for Geoff Palmer) didn't let the weather cool them as they rode to victory by a count of 12 - 9 over Jenny Luttrell-Benardoni and her Cotterel Farms foursome (Jenny Luttrell-Benardoni, Francisco Benardoni 1, Ruben Cossia 5, Matthew Fonseca 2).It was obvious at the start that longtime Antelope quarterback Trotz didn't let the below normal temperature and threatening rain affect his team as they kept their powder dry and took an immediate four goal lead after period number one - a lead that was never to be surrendered.Cotterel was able to close the gap to three in the second at 6 -3, but remained behind that margin going to the half at 7 - 4.The fourth chukker was, once again, played even with the three goal gap enduring to read 8 - 5.Cotterel jumped out in the fifth and narrowed the count to just one early on at 8 - 7 but Antelope responded with three of their own to just one other for the Idahoans and the differential was once again three (11 - 8) going to the final frame. With the temperature falling, the sixth period was - for the third time - played even with each team scoring once and it was over and Antelope had won the first tournament of the 2017 season. For the winners, Sheldon, in his MVP role, scored six times (four foul conversions),  Trotz counted four times, and the aggressive Eldorado Junior Polo graduates Palmer and Heredia scored once each. The runner-up replies came from Fonseca with four, Coscia notched three, and Benardoni scored once. A penalty #1 award filled out their card.Along with Sheldon receiving his well earned accolade, Centasia, played by Trotz in the fifth, was selected as the Best Playing Pony.Tony Gregg

Northern Blizzard Victorious in Governor's Cup

Victory completes a sweep of 2016 season

Gov Cup 2016Canadian John Rooney has been playing polo at Eldorado for some time and in all the years he has traveled south for the winter season he has never entered a team in the Pacific Coast Governor's Cup. When the decision was made last October to play in the seven goal tournaments - for February and March - Rooney insisted that he wanted to put the absolute best team together and be, above all, competitive. Made sense as Rooney is very competitive in what ever he does. With advice from longtime friend and teammate Joe Henderson the decision was made to procure Dayelle Fargey and Team USPA member Jimmy Wright for the two months. After winning three league titles in three tries during the winter, the Governor's Cup was next and Rooney's Northern Blizzard (Rooney 1, Henderson 4, Fargey 1, Wright 1),  with an unblemished record in qualifying play, was in the final of the sought after prize. The opponent - with just one loss in the qualifiers - would be Pro Pool graduates Virgil Kyle and Ryan Robertson and their Bush League organization (Kyle, Robertson, Ulysses Escapite 4, Gaston Von Wernich 4).In front of a very large final day crowd, Northern Blizzard was awarded a handicap goal of one at the start and wasted little time in adding to the bonus as Rooney converted a penalty number three opportunity. Wright was then able to jump out of the middle and score on a 90 yard run and the lead was three very early on. Kyle, on a perfect redirect on a penalty four attempt, brought Bush League back to within one after the first.Any thought that the outlanders might have taken on more than they could handle in this one was quickly dispelled in the second as Bush League came back with authority in the second and were rewarded with a penalty two opportunity that Escapite easily converted - the only goal of the frame. As a result, the second was over with the northern lead just one at 3 - 2.Von Wernich brought Bush league even in the third with a goal from the field, but Wright put Northern Blizzard up by a goal once again with another nice run to score and it was 4 - 3 for the Canadians at the half.Henderson scored his first of the final to give Northern Blizzard a lead of two but Bush League came right back as Escapite counted a pair - a penalty two and a running penalty four that was counted as a field goal and the tally was tied at five going to the fifth. The penultimate frame featured the most scoring of the contest with five goals. Wright grabbed his third counter and Henderson then scored his second and the northern lead was now a pair at 7 - 5. Von Wernich was able to score from the field to come within one, but another Henderson field goal got the Northern Blizzard two goal lead back at 8 - 6. The country boys continued to fight and the result was a penalty number three conversion for Escapite and it was on to the sixth with a one goal lead for Northern Blizzard at 8 - 7.The final frame was one of many opportunities and nothing to show - at least in the scoring department. Bush League, a very worthy opponent, had chances to force an extra stanza but were unable to do so. The northerners had chances to ice the cake but could not. The result was a down to the wire one goal victory for Northern Blizzard and the Governor's Cup was going back to Canada as Rooney had once again struck oil - albeit at a lower price. With his solid and opportunistic play, Wright earned the title of MVP and Brian, played by Henderson in the sixth was selected as the Best Playing Pony.As part of the final day season awards, Kyle and Robertson were presented with the Ronai White sponsor dedication trophy.Tony Gregg

Madison Club Doubles Up to Win Skins

Victors needed only three winning chukkers to grab title

Skins 2016The 2016 Polo Skins Game - the 21st renewal - featured teams that took distinctly different routes to get there. The Madison Club Polo Team (Jennifer Alexy, Joseph Stuart 4, Jared Sheldon 4, Gaston Von Wernich 4) came into the big game undefeated in qualifying play while Ron Mathison's Chateau d'Esclans (Mathison, Marcello Rodriguez-Abbiati 5, Marcello Fassetta 5, Chad Bowman 2) arrived the hard way after winning a shootout over Twin Palms and Cotterel Farms. Truth is, however, it doesn't matter one bit how you get there - it's what you do when you get there to grab the $20,000 spread among six periods of polo. The scoring started quickly as Chateau d'Esclans' Rodriguez-Abbiati took the ball out of the opening throw-in and scampered unmolested to score in the first 25 seconds of play. Not at all phased, Madison Club got that one back as Von Wernich scored his only goal of the afternoon a short time later. Sheldon, on a very fast horse, simply outran everyone to score his first and the count now favored the Madison Club by one. The winemakers were able to come back quickly as Fassetta counted a penalty four and the first ended in a tie at two each to create the first carryover of the day.  The second 'skin' would be worth $6,666.00. (2 - 2)The second featured many long runs, spectacular defensive play to prevent goals, and yes, a few dropped balls. Sheldon struck for the only goal of the period on a long run from his own end as he simply couldn't be caught and the money available was behind the gates of the Madison Club as they led with $6,666.00 to nil. The third would therefore be worth $3,333.00. (Madison Club 1 - 0)Seemingly buoyed by the win in the second, the Madison Club was able to apply early pressure in the third that resulted in a penalty two conversion by Sheldon. Rodriguez-Abbiati was then able to score his second goal to generate the second carryover of the day and the half was over with no change in the lead and the fourth to be worth $6,666.00. (1 - 1)With a chance to even the money count in the fourth, the wine makers came out and carried the early pressure which allowed Fassetta to convert two penalty two opportunities. However, Sheldon scored another to narrow the gap to just one. Rodriguez-Abbiati, a Skins veteran, then came back to score his third and shortly after Fassetta counted his fourth and Chateau d'Esclans were on their way to tie the dollar tally. Stuart broke free at the end and scored his first of the afternoon, but the Skin went to the winery and each team had acquired $6,666.00. (Chateau d'Esclans 4 - 2)With the currency total even, the fifth chukker was pretty much even as well. Stuart scored his second for the Madison  Club and Fassetta his fifth for the Chateau and it appeared that another carry over was imminent. Not to be, as Stuart was afforded a 40 yard free shot that he converted and the Madison Club took the $3,333.00 and had now earned $9,999.00. (Madison Club 2 - 1)Trying to tie the money total, Chateau d'Esclans leaped out in the final frame as Fassetta struck for his sixth goal to lead by one. However, the Madison Club responded with unrelenting pressure that allowed Stuart to crush a penalty four followed by a beautiful goal scoring run by Alexy from the right corner. The now one goal advantage seemed to give the Club an edge as they were able to shut down the wine makers while getting another goal by Stuart. The addition of another $3,333.00 gave the Madison Club the Skins title by a count of $13,332.00 to $6,666.00. ( Madison Club 3 - 1)As well as winning the championship, The Madison Club, because they outscored Chateau d'Esclans by a count of 11 - 9, took home the Richard Roenisch bronzes.Based on his very aggressive and contributing play, Sheldon was chosen as the MVP and his third chukker horse, SportsCenter went back to the barn wearing the Best Playing Pony Blanket.Tony Gregg

Northern Blizzard Grabs March 6-8 Goal Final

Cold north wind continues to freeze M3

8 Goal March LeagueFor the third final in a row, Northern Blizzard (John Rooney 1, Joe Henderson 4, Dayelle Fargey 1, Jimmy Wright 1) continued their dominance of M3 (Madelyn Cobb, Jared Sheldon 4, Peter Blake 3, Alonzo Cruz, Andrea Brereton sub for inj Cobb) as they rode to a very low scoring victory by a final count of 5 - 2.With their usual extremely quick start, M3 was all over Northern Blizzard early but could not score. No matter what they did, Sheldon and Blake - who broke open frequently - were unable to find the goal. The Canadian invaders didn't fare much better when opportunities came their way and the result was almost 11 minutes of polo being played until the first goal was scored - from the field and off the mallet of Henderson. Sheldon tied the count in the third period with an open goal conversion from 15 yards but Henderson's second of the half gave Rooney and Co. a lead of one at 2 - 1 going to the second half. The low score was not indicative of the open and exciting play that featured close to twenty missed opportunities to that point in time. The fourth chukker action was much the same as the first three - fast and open. With Henderson counting his third and a goal by Fargey, the northern invaders now led by three with two periods to go.In the penultimate frame, Henderson increased the difference to four but Brereton scored from the field for M3 to come within three once again. The sixth continued to feature open and fast polo but goals were not to be found and the very entertaining game was over and Northern Blizzard had won a third 2016 championship.Tony Gregg

Twin Palms Victorious in 12 Goal March League Final

Luna polo stays close early on but unable to gain ground

12 Goal March LeagueChris Maloney and his Twin Palms foursome (Maloney 1, Graham Bray 3, Santiago Wulff 5, Remy Du Celliee Muller 3) ascended the presentation platform for the third time in four 2016 attempts as they defeated Jennifer Alexy and Luna Polo ( Alexy, Jared Sheldon 4, Joseph Stuart 4, Nicolas Maciel 4 - sub for Lindor Novillo 4) by a final score of 12 - 7.Luna Polo - arriving in the final via a shootout win over Cotterel Farms and Highwood -  was able to stay reasonably close in the early going but Twin Palms was simply too strong and gradually pulled away after a close first chukker (2 - 2) to lead by three at the half (7 - 4).An 11 - 5 count after five indicated that it was, once again, Maloney and Co.'s  day as they had little to do in the final frame in order to grab the spoils for the third Sunday in a row.Wulff led the scoring for the winners with six goals (one penalty four) while Maloney (two open goal) and Du Celliee Muller each counted three. For Luna Polo, Sheldon - in another strong effort - counted five times (two open goals), with Stuart and Maciel added one apiece. With the win, Twin Palms looked very ready to move on the 2016 Skins Tournament.Tony Gregg
